I am generally optimistic about technology. As with every new innovation there are oportunities for good and oppotunities to do harm.
I have to admit that I am instinctively frightened by some technology and and am particularly concerned by any attempt to modify the natural environment. There is no evidency that any attempt to modify the natural environment has untimately resulted in long term positive outcomes. The introduction of animals or preditors has always been deletarious. I know that the mechanism used to create GM has improved and it is no longer the crude shot in the dark it was. However, the need for legal protection of GM manufacturers in the US just flashes a big warning sign. And, the fact that you can't buy GM free soya in America anymore because all plants have been corrupted demonstrates that once a GM product is released into the environment it cannot be contained.
There is a very simple arrangements that would convince everyone that GM is safe. GM companies could:
- give up limited liability.
- make directers, shareholders and employees liable for all products imperpituity.
- establish and maintain teams of people who are capable of removing all evidence of any GM product from the environment.
- establish an escro account with sufficient funds.
